Jay “C” Paul is engaged in the general practice of law and has a wide-variety of legal experience obtained in small firms, solo practice and serving for 12 years as the elected prosecutor in Prince George County, Virginia. During his 20 years of practicing law, Mr. Paul has served a diverse client base giving him the experience and qualifications to handle legal matters in a variety of areas. Jay “C” Paul’s 20 years of experience includes the following:
CRIMINAL LAW EXPERIENCE During my 20 years of practicing criminal law, I have litigated all different types of criminal cases ranging from complex drug offenses, to violent crimes, DUI, sex offenses, violations of probation, theft crimes, and domestic violence. My criminal law experience is extensive and has included working as both a defense attorney and as a prosecutor. I spent over 8 years in a private practice that included criminal defense before I was elected as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince George County, Virginia.During my 12 years as the elected prosecutor for Prince George County, I tried cases and supervised attorneys working on criminal cases. This experience as a prosecutor has made me familiar with how cases are brought to trial and what legal strategies the prosecution will use prior to going to court and now serves to the benefit of my clients.
FAMILY LAW EXPERIENCE During the eight years prior to taking office as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince George County, I served as a guardian ad litem for children in several hundred cases involving custody, parental rights and foster care plans. I also represented parties in contested and uncontested divorce matters and in custody matters. Quite often, these matters were contested and went to trial.
BUSINESS LAW EXPERIENCE During my private practice, I represented 16 corporations as their registered agent and handled many of their business matters. Additionally, I appeared in contested court cases involving contracts, land-lord tenant matters, judgements and contract matters.
OTHER MATTERS During my private practice, I also prepared wills, advance medical directives, power of attorneys and other civil issues.
During the 12 years I served as the elected Commonwealth’s Attorney for Prince George County, it was a common occurrence for citizens to stop by my office for legal advice. Many of these matters went beyond the scope of the responsibilities of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. As a courtesy, I would meet with the citizen, review their materials and refer them to an appropriate resource to take care of their legal issue. For this reason, I regularly kept informed of legislative changes and case law in the matters that I currently handle.
TRIAL EXPERIENCE Many legal matters can be resolved without having to go to court for trial. However, some matters cannot be resolved by negotiation. In these cases, I am ready, willing and able to take your case to trial to obtain the best outcome for you.
